People spend the vast majority of their time inside their homes and other indoor environments where they are exposed to a wide range of chemicals from building materials, furnishings, occupants, cooking, consumer products, and other sources. Despite research to date, very little is known about how exposures to indoor chemicals across complex chemical phases and pathways affect human health. The COVID-19 pandemic has only increased public awareness of indoor environments and shed light on the many outstanding questions about how best to manage chemicals indoors. This report identifies gaps in current research and understanding of indoor chemistry and new approaches that can be applied to measure, manage, and limit chemical exposures. Why Indoor Chemistry Matters calls for further research about the chemical transformations that can occur indoors, pathways and timing of indoor chemical exposure, and the cumulative and long-term impacts of exposure on human health. Research priorities should consider factors that contribute to measurable environmental health disparities that affect vulnerable populations, such as the age, location, and condition of buildings that can alter exposures to indoor chemicals.

Components of Chemistry Matters: The Textbookcan be used in a school or home setting for 9th-11th grade students. It can be read independently; although there are numerous questions given in the margin for discussion. Students should have a basic understanding of algebra and how to work with formulas and measurement units. The focus is on inorganic chemistry, but there are a few chapters on organic chemistry. There is a review at the end of each chapter, and though many of the problems can be answered without doing any of the experiments in the practical book some of them are better understood if the student has some laboratory experience.

The softcover Textbook for each subject is in full color. Books are divided into themes or topics and then divided into 22 chapters (24 in chemistry). Yiqi Ruben Luo, PhD, DABCC is an assistant professor of pathology at Stanford University and associate director of clinical chemistry laboratory at Stanford Health Care. He is dedicated to the innovation of clinical diagnostic technologies, and has pioneered the application of label-free immunoassays and top-down mass spectrometry in clinical chemistry. He completed his clinical chemistry fellowship at University of California San Francisco. Before the fellowship, he worked in the clinical diagnostic industry holding multiple managerial positions. He received his PhD in chemistry from Stanford University, and BS from Peking University.

Dr. Run Zhang Shi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology specializing in Clinical Chemistry and Immunology.
